Poetry Corner
Africa
by Maya Angelou

Thus she had lain
sugar cane sweet
deserts her hair
golden her feet
mountains her breasts
two Niles her tears
Thus she has lain
Black through the years.

Over the white seas
rime white and cold
brigands ungentled
icicle bold
took her young daughters
sold her strong sons
churched her with Jesus
bled her with guns.
Thus she has lain.

Now she is rising
remember her pain
remember the loses
her screams loud and vain
remember her riches
her history slain
now she is striding
although she had lain.

Britney Spears Paris Hilton John McCain Brangelina
Britney Spears Angelina Jolie Paris Hilton and John McCain: What They Distract Us From

The entertainment news media frenzy that surrounds American celebrity is often highlighted by paparazzi snapping pictures of Britney Spears going to court fighting for custody of her children (which would be without the glare of the public eye an intimately personal and private matter), to surrounding Britney's car as she pumps $4.75 gasoline, asking her stupid questions without much pretense of journalism. Americans become glued into this sort of entertainment while missing issues such as “Time Horizons” in Iraq and the idea that the U.S. President now has the power to “disappear” an American Citizen if they are labeled an “enemy combatant”. The mindless state of the entertainment media bled into the political realm with John McCain’s comparing of Barrack Obama to the celebrity of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton- Barrack Obama, a U.S. Senator and Harvard educated former University of Chicago Law Professor.

What the entertainment media does is distract. Distract us from focusing on an American President who misled the country into a war, without much of a plan to get out of it, who is on the verge of bankrupting the American economy by giving unprecedented and un-asked for tax cuts to the wealthy, thereby draining the national treasury. Perhaps this was also John McCain’s point in his celebrity ad – to distract us from the failures of Republican leadership and policies. To distract us from the Republican Party’s failure to accept responsibility. To distract us from the fact that John McCain does not have a healthcare plan to cover all Americans (he decries a plan to cover all Americans while as a U.S. Senator and former soldier, the government has paid for his health care most of his adult life) CONTINUE

Obama Change
Voting For Obama More Than Just A Vote by Steve DeVore

I grew up in the Oceanhill-Brownsville section of Brooklyn NY, during the 60’s and 70’s. It was a place that the city classified as a ghetto, but those of us living there called it home. Brownsville was filled with Blacks who struggled from day to day not to live a but to survive living, Many lived in broken down tenement buildings that had no heat or hot water in the winter and nothing but a box window fan to keep them cool in the summer. Apartments in these tenements were infested with mice and roaches, as well as drunks and drug addicts in the hallways. Yet even in these bitter conditions we persevered.

Many turned to religion as a way to deal with their situation; rather it was to attend services at your local storefront church or listening to Rev. Ike on your am radio. Others chose alcohol or drugs to mask the pain of their environment. Yet there were some of us who sought political awareness as a way to overcome. We were born at the end of Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement, but we had Rev Jessie Jackson, Rev Herbert Daughtry and Rev Al Sharpton. Unfortunately their leadership can be classified as flawed at best. CONTINUE

Lil Wayne
Lil Wayne Is The Champion

Hip hop can be like professional wrestling. Although there are no official hip hop champions, occasionally in hip hop there is a “franchise champion” a Hulk Hogan, a Rock, a Stone Cold Steve Austin to carry the brand, carry the label. In hip hop it has been arguably, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Hammer, NWA, Biggie, Tupac, Dre, Snoop, Jay Z, Eminem ,50 Cent, Kanye, and now Lil Wayne to carry the hip hop brand, and puts it on his back. Some of these artist have been transitional champions. ie.. a champion in between eras, for instance, Jay Z inherited what was left of the east coast /west coast bullshit and became a mogul. Which artist are or were transitional champions and which endure and “carry the brand” can usually be seen with hindsight. Whatever the case maybe Lil Wayne now sits on top of the hip hop game.

The hype leading up to Lil Wayne's most recent album “Tha Carter III” has not been seen in the music industry in some time. The New Orleans born rapper illustrates how the so-called dying music industry and hip hop along with it how to survive, make money, and thrive CONTINUE

Sojourner Truth Would Sojourner Truth Want To 'Lick The Rapper?' by Zekita

One morning while riding in my car I decided to venture away from my regular News programming on the radio and turned to one of our local Hip Hop and R&B stations. It wasn’t long before the commercial for some debt creating pay-day loan went off and my ears, mind, and soul was being violated by rapper lil’ Wayne’s song ‘Lollipop.’ As I listened in disgust to the monotony of his lyrics (similar to many I had heard in some contemporary rap songs today) about how some women wanted to ‘lick the rapper’ amongst other things, my eyes began to tear up from those degrading and humiliating lyrics. Keeping in mind that I am in no way picking on any one rapper, I began to think about all of the African American women who fall subject to those words and gobble them up as a ‘way to behave.’ Pardon the pun. And then I thought back to the glorious African American women like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Nzingha, Yaa Asante, and Mary McLeod Bethune. I turned my thoughts to these women and I wonder. I wonder if our fore-mentioned female ancestors are watching us from the other side in utter disgust and humiliation.

I wonder if they cry for us. I wonder if their spirits cringe and fall to their knees in agony as they watch their descendants fall into a deeper pit of sexual promiscuity, self imposed inferiority and hatred, and total mis-education. CONTINUE

Robert Mugabe
Mugabe Chooses The Mobutu Option

This commentary could be about neo-colonialism. How the violent colonial racist regime of Rhodesia, founded upon racism, and greed, and enforced through apartheid and white racist terror produced what is happening in Zimbabwe. This coud be about Cecil Rhodes, the arrogance of white colonizers and settlers, about how the white colonizers took all the good agricultural land for themselves and with guns and bibles defeated an ancient culture and one time empire. for themselves, how the British government worked to limit any real land redistribution post colonialism. This commentary could be about how Zimbabwe has only been a free and independent country since 1980! How in the first 28 years of the United States there were essentially two constituions, the threat of civil war, wars with Native Americans, Slavery, and British invasions. But no.

This commentary is about Robert Mugabe's personal quest to hold onto power, for powers sake, his own sake. Not for the people to whom he is alleged to represent. His own sake. An 85 year old man's desire to hold onto power. The old saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely rings true in Zimbabwe. CONTINUE

Barack Obama Flag
Barack Obama Winner (At Last)

Barack Obama has become the first African American Presidential nominee for a major political party in 232 years since the founding of the republic, in 142 years since the end of slavery, and in 44 years since the end of American apartheid. Although Hillary did not actually concede the night in which he clinched the nomination a few days later Hillary gave a resounding speech in support and full endorsement of Barack Obama. The trick is to get her supporters, some of whom feel it was Hillary's turn, to now support Obama.

Now the nominee, Obama must turn all his attention to the general election. Obama must be prepared to take the gloves off in ways and manners that he shied away from in battling Hillary Clinton. CONTINUE

Obama Win In Iowa Is Now The Time? A Look At Obama's Win In Iowa

Obama's win in an overwhelmingly white Iowa may catapult him to the Democratic nomination. Iowans looked pass race and to the ideas and character of the candidate and chose Barack Obama (Dr. King would be proud). Although Obama's victory is historic, Jesse Jackson won several primaries in 1988 but later fell to Michael Dukakis for the democratic nomination. Bill Clinton failed to win the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary but won the nomination.

Hillary Clinton Barrack Obama John McCain
Win The Battle Lose The War

There are a few questions that remain after several months of democratic primaries. Here are a few:

Will Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton bruise each other to the point that John McCain cakewalks into the White House? This remains to be seen but Hillary's now infamous 3am ad does not help Obama if he is the democratic nominee. Any question regarding the democratic nominee's fitness for the office should be off limits to the two candidates but now Obama having lost Texas and Ohio will be forced to respond and vet Hillary a bit in what will likely be a negative Pennsylvania primary. CONTINUE

Barrack Obama Jeremiah Wright
Obama's Wright

The controversy surrounding sermons by Barack Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright have been discussed throughout the web and blogosphere. Thanks to those who seek the truth and YouTube one can see the entire Wright sermon in context where he is quoting a U.S. Ambassador who says after 9/11 that chickens have come home to roost. The controversy reached such heights due to media networks such as the right-wing Fox News whose repeated unfair and unbalanced examination of the clips of Wright fueled the fire. Obama's speech on race was at first hailed by the media as the beginning as an honest dialogue on race. A couple of weeks later the speech is now becoming marginalized caught up in the next spin cycle.

The truth is Americans can not have an honest dialogue about race because most Ameicans are ignorant of true American history and the history of western civilization of the last 500 years. CONTINUE

Conyers and Sharpton
Still No Justice

Another day, another judge acquits officers of the shooting of an unarmed black man in New York City. Although two of the cops involved in the Sean Bell case were black here is where the mainstream media misses the racism. If the three young men were all white males in there early twenties leaving a bachelor party at a strip club, not a single shot would have been fired by those undercover police officers acquitted in New York. Is there anyone who really believes that the police would have fired on three young white men?

In the constant acquittals of police officers for shooting unarmed black men its clear that one holding of the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott still stands, that the black man has no rights that are bound to be respected by the white man. This courtroom truism seems to specifically apply to police departments across America regardless of the race of the cop who uses there weapons against black men. CONTINUE

NBA Makeover Is Complete

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has allot to be excited about. Just a few years ago critics were predicting the demise of the NBA, with thugged out high schoolers going straight to the NBA, the media in constant search for the next Michael Jordan, and the boring yet sound San Antonio Spurs winning championships. However, this year the NBA feels different, the NBA's Western Conference is so good top to bottom any of the top six teams could make its case for the NBA title. CONTINUE

The DL Down Low and Debatable
by Peggy Butler
*Black women talk candidly about men on the down-low. Warning: If you freak out at the mention of the word sex, reading this article could tarnish your moral values.

On a blustery winter morning in December of 1999, Essex Garvey, a stay-at-home mom of four, was sorting laundry, when a glaring exhibition caught her eye. On the TV was a woman recently diagnosed with HIV. Noting the pained look on the woman's face, Garvey discovered that the culprit was the woman's boyfriend, an admitted bisexual. Pointing wildly at the TV she sighed: "Damn, that woman should have known her man was poking the log at both ends of the totem pole. Now, that would never happen to me." CONTINUE
