Poetry Corner
Africa
by Maya Angelou

Thus she had lain
sugar cane sweet
deserts her hair
golden her feet
mountains her breasts
two Niles her tears
Thus she has lain
Black through the years.

Over the white seas
rime white and cold
brigands ungentled
icicle bold
took her young daughters
sold her strong sons
churched her with Jesus
bled her with guns.
Thus she has lain.

Now she is rising
remember her pain
remember the loses
her screams loud and vain
remember her riches
her history slain
now she is striding
although she had lain.

The End of Facts In American Politics

What happens in a democracy when truth and facts no longer matter in political discourse. Did America's founding fathers contemplate this? Did Socrates or Aristotle? In 2010 America we are at this point. The American media gives much attention to people who proclaim to be a part of a tea party movement. People who rile against the government and yet receive government paid for Medicare or VA benefits or unemployment benefits. A tea party movement who as Bill Maher pointed out do not realize their taxes went down as a result of the stimulus bill. CONTINUE

Howard University Black Education - Why Celebrate Black History Month? by Pamela Hamilton

Dr. Carter G. Woodson saw that black education was riddled with voids. Woodson is the Father of Black History Month and the second African American to receive his PhD from Harvard University. By 1915, he took upon himself the task of filling those voids of knowledge that black people lacked about themselves.

In 1926, Woodson established an annual week-long celebration of black history, then known as Negro History Week. The week he chose in February fell on the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, men whom we have learned to associate with the ending of slavery. In 1976, this week of celebrating black history was expanded to the entire month of February. We celebrate black history month in February because Woodson, son of a former slave, chose that month, not because it is the shortest month in the year. CONTINUE

Carter G Woodson Black History Month Still Relevant In 2010

The history of African American struggle in America continues to be important to teach not just for one month of the year but throughout the year. History is relevant and provides context to contemporary issues, problems and concerns in the African American community. Whether the issue is policing, poverty which leads to crime, education opportunities, or employment opportunities. History is relevant and provides context to contemporary issues, problems and concerns in the African American community. Whether the issue is policing, poverty which leads to crime, education opportunities, or employment opportunities.

Celebrating black history as we have previously stated certainly should not end with the first African American President. The cultural traditions and struggle of the people of African American descent must continue to be learned. CONTINUE

Chief Justice John Roberts
Emperor John Roberts Creates Corporate Kingdom

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts in his short reign as head of the only unelected branch of the federal government has done more in a short time to move constitutional jurisprudence and the country to the right than anyone could have imagined. His Supreme Court is willing to overturn 100 years of precedent limiting corporations from participating in the political system, has equated laws prohibiting discrimination as discrimination itself, and considered overturning the historic Voting Rights Act. His court is not merely calling balls and strikes. He is making his court the entire game. His court's ruling has the potential of eliminating the Congress or the Presidency from being elected by the American people to one directly elected and selected by corporations. CONTINUE

The Supreme Court
Supreme Court Gives Birth To Corporate State

How a state created registered and chartered institution can then be given the rights of human beings is moronic, it belies logic, and was previously unthinkable. The Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission is not only morally wrong it also is not based soundly in law. In overturning a ban in direct corporate advocacy of a candidate in place since 1907 the Supreme Court has opened the door for corporate conglomerates foreign and domestic to spend an unlimited amount of money directly supporting or against a candidate for election. It allows corporations from Wall Street to Dubai to China to directly thank their sponsors in Congress by running ads, and spending an unlimited amount of money in direct support of a candidate over another. CONTINUE

Martin Luther King I Have A Dream
Celebrate The Life and Vision of Martin Luther King

With the world's attention rightly on the devastation in Haiti, the people of Haiti, and the poverty in Haiti, in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday we provide King in his own words, in an economic message about poverty, wealth, and the next phase of the civil rights movement...

Where Do We Go From Here by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Now, in order to answer the question, "Where do we go from here?" which is our theme, we must first honestly recognize where we are now. When the Constitution was written, a strange formula to determine taxes and representation declared that the Negro was 60 percent of a person. CONTINUE

Haiti Presidential Palace
Earthquake Causes Devastation In Haiti

The nations and peoples of the African Diaspora too must come to the aid of Haiti in the wake of the devastating 7.0 earthquake that struck the capital Port-au-Prince. According to reports it seems a city of 2 million people has been destroyed. There has been no estimates on the death toll but its expected to be in the thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands. Throughout the blogosphere the use of social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr has brought the most up to date news and images. CONTINUE

President Obama
For President Obama Democrats 2,010 Challenges and Opportunities

As President Obama completes his first full year in office great challenges remain. Although many of the challenges remain a legacy of the Bush administrations failures, the public has a short memory. Republican's, teabaggers, and independents alike suffer from political amnesia. The deficit and record spending were caused by the Bush administration and a Republican controlled congress. Unfinished wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, thanks Bush. The Wall Street bailout/giveaway without oversight was pushed through by Bush. Obama was not yet elected. CONTINUE

President Obama Senator Reid
Conversations About Race and Racism

It is not surprising that Republicans on the right cannot see the difference between Trent Lott's comments in support of Strom Thurman's segregationist run for President and Harry Reid's comments on the electability of Barrack Obama from a white perspective. Not all conversations about race are racist but there are racist conversations. CONTINUE

Grammy's Mock Hip Hop

The Grammy nomination of a song derived from a Saturday Night Live sketch is an insult to hip hop music and artist but to the Grammy organization itself. This year's Grammy Nominees in the category of Best Rap/Sung Collaboration are Ego Beyoncé & Kanye West Knock You Down Keri Hilson, Kanye West & Ne-Yo Run This Town Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West, Dead And Gone T.I. & Justin Timberlake and finally I'm On A Boat The Lonely Island & T-Pain CONTINUE

Musa Yar'Adua Moussa Dadis Camera
In West Africa Health of Leaders Dominate

Dispatches from the Diaspora. In the West African nations of Nigeria and Guinea the health of its leaders who both came to power in different ways dominate the news. In Nigeria President Musa Yar'Adua' the democratically elected President of 151 million people has been in a Saudi hospital since the middle of November for acute pericarditis, inflammation of the heart's lining. Many in Nigeria fear a power vacuum due to his absence. Nigeria has experienced many military coups since independence. The last of which was the brutal military regime of Sani Abacha which ended in 1998. The focus and uncertainty on the leaders health underlines the fragility of Africa's largest democratic state. Properly named, Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, would succeed the President if he is unable to resume his official duties. CONTINUE

Pelosi Hoyer Clyburn
Stupak Amendment and the Negotiable Rights of Women

Allowing a health care bill to pass the House of Representatives that included provisions that restrict the rights of women to make their own private decisions about whether or not to have children is outrages. In an effort to play the politics necessary to get the bill passed Speaker Pelosi, blue dog Democrats such as Bart Stupak, and the lobbying efforts of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a message to women that their constitutional rights are negotiable.

The now infamous Stupak Amendment, which essentially states that no money or federal subsidies can go toward covering abortions in the health care bill, appears to go a bit further than the Hyde amendment which already bans federal funds for abortion. CONTINUE

The DL Down Low and Debatable
by Peggy Butler
*Black women talk candidly about men on the down-low. Warning: If you freak out at the mention of the word sex, reading this article could tarnish your moral values.

On a blustery winter morning in December of 1999, Essex Garvey, a stay-at-home mom of four, was sorting laundry, when a glaring exhibition caught her eye. On the TV was a woman recently diagnosed with HIV. Noting the pained look on the woman's face, Garvey discovered that the culprit was the woman's boyfriend, an admitted bisexual. Pointing wildly at the TV she sighed: "Damn, that woman should have known her man was poking the log at both ends of the totem pole. Now, that would never happen to me." CONTINUE
