In the month of February we take time to celebrate Black History Month. For one month we have the opportunity to remember the unique experience of African Americans in America. Its an opportunity for us to remember the legends that came before. You know the names: Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X and Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month.

Black History Month is not about division or separation its about a celebration of black history and culture. Its about appreciating a perspective and world view through the eyes of a people brought to America in chains, fought slavery, and the American apartheid system known as segregation. American's are often too quick to forget history and its relevance to today. Many fail to see the link between slavery, segregation and black poverty. Many fail to see the economic toll of 100 years of segregation and laws against black accumulation of wealth and how that translates over generations.

Black History Month is not only an opportunity to look back and gain the lessons of the past but its an opportunity to use those lessons to move forward. Whether fighting re-segregation attempts by schools in North Carolina, whether its fighting against a European only view of the world in Arizona schools in or fighting attempts to marginalize the votes of people of color. Understanding the battles for civil rights and voting rights 45 years ago will guide us in maintaining these today and in the future.
