Lady Gaga DADT

Lady Gaga Shows Political Power

Music superstar Lady Gaga is using the power of her celebrity to help end the military policy of Don't Ask Don't Tell which prohibits openly gay Americans from serving in the military. The repeal of don't ask don't tell is attached to a defense appropriations bill but a filibuster by Republican Senators may stall the legislation. DADT policy was a compromise measure in 1993 by then-President Bill Clinton who campaigned on the promise to allow all citizens to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation.

Lady Gaga will be rallying in Maine the home of the two remaining moderate Republican Senators in the U.S. Senate. If the bill gets filibustered they could vote with the Democrats to end it and force a vote on the bill. Lady Gaga has over 6 million followers on twitter and is using the power of the tweet to get her little monsters politically active. Her timing could not be better in a time when progressives, instead of sitting on the sidelines in shock at the far right tea party, need to take action.

Most Western military forces have removed policies that prohibit gay people from serving openly in the military including Britain, France, Russia, Canada, and Israel. President Obama had been criticized on the left for not moving fast enough in repealing DADT. However in a speech before the Human Rights Campaign and at the 2010 State of the Union address he stated that he would work this year to repeal the ban.
