BART Verdict Cop Who Killed Unarmed Man Convicted

The cop whose killing of an unarmed black man seen around the world on youtube was convicted on involuntary manslaughter. BART cop Johannes Mehserle could get 5 to 14 years in prison. Perhaps escaping the fate of his victim. Prosecutors sought a murder conviction for the cop who took out his gun and shot Oscar Grant in the back. At least he was convicted of something. The jury which did not have a single African American on the jury could have acquitted the white officer. In fact it is rare that white police officers get any time for killing unarmed African Americans.

This case shines a further light the on critical issues of race and policing. To our knowledge their has not been a single case of white officers shooting and killing unarmed white suspects. Race is a critical component of the Mehserle case. If Oscar Grant is white he is alive today. This is the truth the guilt that Johannes Mehserle has to live with for the rest of his life. This is the truth in all the cases where unarmed people of color are killed by police without criminal repercussion. The police do not shoot if they see a white face. If a suspect is white they do not suspect a wallet is a gun. If a suspect is white the person was not reaching for an unknown object.

The jury got it wrong. This was murder. Oscar Grant was down on his stomach where he could have been simply hand cuffed. Instead Mehserle took out his gun and shot him. Regret does not make it involuntary. There needs to be a California state and or federal law making it murder for the police to shoot an unarmed person removing the intent of the officer as an element of the crime. As the law stands now they can kill at will as long as they say they saw a weapon or thought one was reaching for a weapon, regardless of the reasonableness of the assertion. The balance of power must sway back to the people. Call it the Oscar Grant Law.
