Guru of Gang Starr Remembered

Hip hop music has lost another legend. According to news reports around the web including hip hop hall of famer Guru (Keith Elam) of Gang Starr passed away at the age of 43 of cancer. The MC's smooth vocals over a fusion of hip hop and jazz and production with DJ Premier added a multi-layered dimension to hip hop during the 1990's. The public first got word of Guru's health concerns in March when he fell into a coma after suffering a heart attack.

As a solo artist Guru is best known for Jazzmatazz the jazz hip hop collaboration featuring his rhymes over jazz music. Gang Starr's classics include Step into the Arena which features the amazing lyrics of Just to get a Rep and Who's gonna take the weight? The albums Daily Operation, Hard To Earn and Moment of Truth are also great in lyrics and production. He added intellect and poetry to hip hop. He understood the relational similarities between jazz as a black created art form and hip hop as a black created musical art.
