Jamaica News Gangs and Police Collide

The Jamaican government has issued a state of emergency as the police fought armed gangs who are trying to prevent the extradition of an alleged drug lord Christopher Dudus Coke. According to reports gangs erected barricades throughout the capital Kingston and attacked three police stations. The Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding issued a state of emergency for Kingston and surrounding areas.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert for Jamaica on Friday May 21, 2010. Click here to see the travel alert The advisory states that, "the possibility exists for violence and/or civil unrest in the greater Kingston metropolitan area. There are unconfirmed reports of criminal gang members amassing in the Kingston area, as well as mobilization of Jamaican defense forces."
