Kamla Is New Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago

The election in Trinidad and Tobago has led to Kamla Persad-Bissessar, becoming the first woman Prime Minister of the island nation Trinidad and Tobago. She joins the ranks of other women who have led Caribbean nations such as Jamaica’s Portia Simpson-Miller who led Jamaica in 2006 and 2007.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is a trailblazer, she was the first woman to serve as Attorney General, acting Prime Minister,Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago. In January Persad-Bissessar was elected Political Leader of the United National Congress, defeating the party's founder, Basdeo Panday. She was formally appointed Opposition Leader on February 25th, 2010. According to Trinidad Newsday and the Trinidad Express early results her party coalition took 29 seats to PNM’s 12 seats.

She like other Western Hemisphere leaders ran on the promise of change, stating, “You can hold me accountable to the promise of change that we offered you. I knew the time had come. A new page has been turned and the responsibility to each of you is now on my shoulders. I will not let you down." On Kamla's Facebook page she further states, "Thank You Trinidad & Tobago! Thank you for believing in the People’s Partnership! Thank you for believing in yourselves and the power of the people! We now stand on the cusp of a great moment in our history, one in which we begin the task of bringing our citizens together to rebuild our nation. A new page had been turned and the responsibility to each of you is now on my shoulders. I will not let you down."
