First off this Super Bowl marks an incredible 9th Super Bowl for the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady Patriots. America is tired of seeing them yet incredibly no one in the AFC has stepped up to beat them. How can that be? How is it that given the Patriots’ run, the AFC East isn’t the most dominant division in football. Remember in the 1980’s when the Super Bowls were mostly won by NFC teams specifically the 49ers, Redskins, Giants, and Bears. They stepped up. In fact between 1982 and 1997 the AFC won a single Super Bowl.
This year the NFC is better. You think the Patriots would’ve made it out of the NFC South playing Drew Brees twice a year? NFC North, playing Aaron Rodgers twice a year? Sure the Patriots beat a talented Charger team playing at 10am local time which was completely unfair to the Chargers. By the time the Chargers woke up the game was over. Against Kansas City, the oh so brilliant Patriots were out scored 31-17 in the second half and were saved by (1) an idiotic defensive offside on a play in which Brady through an interception and (2) the flip of a coin in OT without which the Patriots would be watching the Super Bowl from home.
As great as the Patriots 5 Super Bowl wins have been. They arguably really should have one 3 of them. The Seahawks not giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch and the Falcons inexplicably forgetting how to play football after being up 21-3 at halftime should have both been Super Bowl wins for those teams.
Here, unlike the Seahawks or the Falcons, the Rams are not going to take their foot off the gas. To beat the Patriots you have to slay the beast. You have to be the Ray Lewis Ravens, you have to not be scared of the Patriots, you gotta go after Brady. The Chiefs inexplicably did not make Brady uncomfortable. You have to make him uncomfortable. Sort of like Philadelphia did last year with their talented defense. The Rams have the players to do just that. The Patriots have not faced a team with the talent of the Rams. The Chiefs cracked the Patriots code and in the Super Bowl the Rams will exploit it.
Oddsmakers in Las Vegas has the Patriots as the 2.5 point favorite. We’re not betting the game here but we would take the Rams to win. Arguably the Patriots worse loss this year was at the Titans getting blown out 34-10. The Rams didn’t really have a bad loss. Maybe losing 15-6 at Chicago? We know Belichick and Brady usually find a way. But the Falcons and Seahawks, Super Bowl keeps coming to mind, the Falcons were clearly the better team as was the Seahawks, yet they took the foot off the gas and lost the game. The Rams like those other NFC teams are more talented than the Patriots, and if they don’t let up they should win the Super Bowl.
