The actions of the Republican Party in the United States Congress particularly in the United States Senate must be called what it is Un-American. Republican Senators representing a minority of 41 votes acted in unison in blocking assistance for millions of Americans receiving unemployment benefits. These out of touch aristocratic Republican Senators have no clue what its like out for the jobless. They ridicule and seem to despise those who are out of work. Despite the fact that there are roughly 6 applicants for every single job available.
Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan said it best stating that the Republicans in the Senate want this economy to fail for political purposes. Michigan has been especially hit by the downturn with unemployment at 13.6 percent. When American’s do not know how they are going to put food on the table or make the next mortgage payment due to job losses caused by Wall Street’s biblical greed Republican see it fit to play the ideological too much government spending game. Especially when they made no objections and pushed through unnecessary tax cuts for the super wealthy in 2001 and 2003 which is now the foundation for the federal budget deficit we have today. There is never too much government spending when it comes to kick backs or rather tax breaks to the corporations that fund them and send the jobs overseas. They are so pro-corporate over the average American that finally members of the Republican Party are apologizing to BP even though they created the disaster in the Gulf and have not figured out a way to stop the oil from gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.
Republican Senators voted against an unemployment extension despite the fact that many of them are from states with high rates of unemployment. This is further evidence that they just do not care about their constituents. For example, take John Ensign Republican from Nevada. The unemployment rate for Nevada jumped to 14 percent making it the highest in the nation. Does not matter he voted to filibuster an extension of unemployment benefits which would help the people he is elected to represent. George LeMieux Republican of Florida voted with his comrades although Florida’s unemployment is among the highest in the nation at 11.7 percent. The Republican Senators of Mississippi (11.4 percent unemployed) and South Carolina (11 percent unemployed) followed suit although their states too have some of the highest unemployment in the nation.
President Obama and the Democrats inherited from the Bush Administration the worse economy since the Great Depression. Given this do the Republicans help govern? No. They have filibustered bills that would help most Americans at a record pace. They have fought reform of Wall Street despite their primary role in the economic crisis. How could their standing in the polls be improving when they created this economic nightmare and are doing nothing to help American’s get out of it. If Republicans take control of Congress it will not be the Democrats who will lose it will be the American people. What the Republicans want is a return to the economic policies of Bush and Cheney. If that happens, if they succeed we can then stop fooling ourselves by calling whats happening now the Great Recession because it will then become a depression.
